Are You Choosing Your Life or Just Continuing It?

I asked myself a question recently that made me sit still for a minute:

If I had the opportunity to choose my life today, how much of it would I choose again?

Whew.

My first instinct was to think about what I would change. Then I caught myself. Why was change the first place my mind went?

There is so much of my life I would choose again.

The people. The work. The freedom. The laughter. The quiet mornings. The decisions that once scared me and now feel like home. Even some of the things that didn’t turn out the way I expected have earned their place in my story.

I would choose them again.

That realization shifted the question for me.

Choosing your life doesn’t always mean changing it. Sometimes the most powerful choice is looking at what already exists and saying, Yes. This. Still.

I think we underestimate that.

We make thousands of decisions that eventually become routines. Routines become patterns. Patterns become years. Before long, something we actively chose five years ago is simply…what we do.

That doesn’t make it wrong.

It does make it worth revisiting.

Would I choose this today?

I’ve started asking myself that question about more than the big things.

Would I choose how I’m spending my time?

Would I choose the conversations I’m having?

Would I choose what gets access to my energy?

Would I choose the pace at which I’m living?

Would I choose the way I’m showing up in this season?

Some answers come quickly.

Hell yes.

Others make me squint a little.

And a few require me to admit that something may have worked beautifully for the woman I was and still have no assignment in the life I’m living now.

That’s agency.

The ability to look at your own life and participate in it.

I don’t want to wake up five years from now and realize I kept doing something simply because I never stopped to decide again.

I want to be able to look around my life and recognize my fingerprints.

I chose this.

I chose the yes.

I chose the no.

I chose to stay.

I chose to leave.

I chose to try again.

I chose to change my mind.

I chose to want more.

I chose to enjoy what I already had.

Some choices will be made once. Others deserve to be made over and over again.

Maybe that’s what living deliberately really looks like.

You don’t have to blow up your life every time you evolve. You do owe yourself the freedom to look at it honestly.

So, here’s the question I’m sitting with this month and I’m passing it across the table to you:

Are you choosing your life…or just continuing it?

Look around before you answer.

You may discover there’s more you want to change.

You may also discover there’s a whole lot you’d choose again.

Either way, choose.

This is your life.

Put your fingerprints on it.
